David Ireland & the 137th NY

Gentlemen,

I have been corresponding with David Cleutz, a historian of the 137th NY Infantry and author of 2 books on the subject. One of his E-mails contained the following:

"I had a visitor from Huntington Beach here today, who asked me to take him on a tour of the 1850's park-like cemetery to see Col. Ireland's monument. Someone had placed a small Christmas evergreen spray by the side of the monument - very touching to see. He had no children, but has lots of "adopted descendants" who take every opportunity to pay respects. See the attached pic. I'm glad to count you in that number of his admirers."

Thought you guys would enjoy.

Mike

  2. Jamie,

Col. Ireland's final resting place is in the Spring Forest Cemetery, Binghamton, Broome County, N.Y.

Binghamton is the home base of David Cleutz, originally from the Gettysburg area.

  6. Col. Ireland and all other CW Vets buried at Spring Forest Cemetery, Binghamton, NY, will be honored by luminaria on Saturday evening, November 5, 2011. Reenactors of the 137th NY, with their musicians, will be present at Col. Ireland's monument. The public is invited to drive thru the cemetery to view the luminaria - a stirring sight on a cool fall night in the hills of this 1830's "garden cemetery".

  7. You all missed out on a great time with Charlie Fennell. I took a group of Lifetime Learning Institute people from Binghamton University to Gettysburg on October 19. I was able to get Charlie as our guide. Of course, he made sure the bus went up Culp's Hill, where he could point out where Col. David Ireland and the 137th NY saved the battle on the night of July 2. I presented Charlie with a TShirt with David Ireland's image on it, courtesy of the president of the Binghamton CW Roundtable.

  8. By the way, you all may be interested in my latest book, soon to be published by Gettysburg Publishing - "Rebels in the Front Yard". It's the true story of 6 teenagers in Hanover and Gettysburg, June 30, 1863, and amid the Battle of Gettysburg.
